Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense provides services for cultural education and research in the field of literary history

All services are free, with the exception of requests for photographic reproductions and Interlibrary Loan.
The Library participates in the Federazione Idem (Identity management per l’accesso federato), , promoted by GARR, in an effort to make it easier for academic institutions to access its services.
Requests for books for reading or borrowing are made through the electronic library catalog.
ID (ID card, driver’s license or passport) is sufficient to access information services.
Registration is required to use the Library’s services.
A different registration is required to reserve seats in the Library rooms at booking.bibliotecabraidense.org.

For in-house reference services, it is necessary to fill the ONLINE FORM,, e-mail [email protected] a copy of your ID and wait for confirmation of registration from the reception office.
Alternatively, after completing the online form, you can complete the registration by coming to the Library.

WARNING: Just filling out the online form does not enable automatically generated credentials from the system.

For the loan service, it is necessary to follow the directions for registering for in-house reference services and then go to the Library, with your ID and a passport photo, to complete the registration with the issuance of a card.
Residents of Lombardy, over 18 years of age, and people temporarily domiciled in Milan and province for study or work purposes are eligible for the lending service.

 
Registration Hours:
• Monday-Friday, 8.30 a.m.-6 p.m.
• Saturday, 8.30 a.m.-1.30 p.m.

Local loan

Up to two documents may be borrowed for a maximum of four units (in the case of multi-volume works); thesis students may take advantage of the possibility, limited to a six-month period, to request up to three documents.
Volumes printed within the last 70 years in good condition, free of out-of-text plates and signatures eligible for loan may be provided.
All other volumes are excluded from loan; for these volumes under fruition there is no loan option.

The loan has a maximum duration of thirty days (including holidays) and may be renewed once for an additional month or fraction thereof.
The expiration date, shown on the receipt that is delivered together with the requested works, indicates THE MAXIMUM LIMIT WITHIN WHICH TO RETURN THE VOLUME, under penalty of the prescribed suspension.

In the absence of reservations, it is possible to renew the loan.
The request can be made by the cardholder, no later than one week before the expiration date, either by going in person to the Reception desk with the book and its receipt, or remotely, by logging in with a user code and password to their reserved area from the address:
https://mil.sbn.it/servizi, After clicking on the Current Requests item, locate the book to be extended, click on Extend and confirm. Next, verify that the request has been accepted. If not, the reader must return the volume.
When the user picks up the volume, he or she is required to check its integrity and condition, because he or she must return it in the same state in which it was entrusted to him or she will be suspended from the service.
The holder may entrust a third party only with the final return of the borrowed volume, together with the corresponding receipt.

Latecomers will be suspended from the loan service for a period equal to the delay.

Failure to return borrowed works will result in the penalties provided for in Art, 58 of Presidential Decree 417/95.

To access the loan you must be enrolled in Home Loan.
The loan request can be submitted directly from the Online Catalog.
After locating the desired work in the online catalog:

  • • click on the Request item (which appears in the Fruition field)
  • • Complete the User Identification form as follows:
  • • User/Tax Code: type the abbreviation NB followed by the number of the loan membership card or the tax code
  • • Enter Password
  • • click on the login button

Then proceed by following the next screens until the request is entered. When finished, the message “Request entry successfully made” will appear. In case the book to be requested has been borrowed by another user, it will appear “In Reading” on the online catalog page. In this case, you can reserve it. Upon its return, you will receive an e-mail at the address given at the time of registration.
Please specify, in the user note field, the approximate time you intend to pick up the work.

Readers to pick up the requested volumes should go to the Atrium and show their Library card.
The volumes remain available to the requestor for seven days.
Works requested but not picked up in a timely manner will be placed back in storage.

Users are encouraged to reserve volumes the day before pickup.

Readers who sign up for email consultation, and borrowing only once they have gone to the library, may request a change of service of requested books from home.

Inter-library loan

Through the Library it is possible to borrow volumes from other Libraries. Books on interlibrary loan should be checked out in the reading room or, with the permission of the lending library, may be admitted for home loan.
Expenses related to national and international interlibrary loan are the responsibility of the user.
For borrowing criteria see Presidential Decree 05/07/1995, No. 417.

Method of payment (by the user)
The fees, per ministerial guidelines consist of:
• 4.63 euro up to 2 volumes, if for the same user requested in ILL SBN
• 5.16 euro up to 2 volumes, if for the same user requested by electronic mail
• 7.75 euro up to 3 volumes (again for the same user) or for a 1-2 volumes weighing more than 2 kg

Consultation of printed material

The Consultation Room is provided for users who need to read or study books or materials that cannot leave the Library.
The Room can accommodate 44 readers per day, and to access it you must reserve your place at this link.
Some reference works, encyclopedias and dictionaries, about 15,000 direct access volumes are available on the shelves of the Hall.
Books and materials can be left in storage for a period of 15 days.
The request for photocopying must be authorized by the Hall Manager, and the user making the request is required to fill out the appropriate form.

1. Search for the Work in the Online Catalog and then click on Title.
2. in the field at the bottom services, click on the item Request
3. Complete the User Identification form:
– User Code: type NB followed by the reader code of the membership card (e.g. NB00000).
– Password: type (your own password which for the 1st time will consist of the Tax Code, written in capitals, then CREATE
– the new password (at least 8 characters) and type it 2 times.
– Then click on LOGIN

4. Open the blue service dropdown and choose the desired service:
• Stock consultation (for in-house reading)
• Stock lending materials (for home lending)

5. Click NEXT
adding in the user note any communications

6. click NEXT, and confirm your Password
7. click on INSERT REQUEST
The transaction is completed when the notice (in green at the top) successful request entry comes out.
To make another request, click on Home (little house icon in the upper right corner)
NB: The user will be called by Surname at the counter to pick up modern works every 30 minutes.
Antique works will be picked up in the Consultation Room.
If he/she will have launched the request from home, he/she will find them ready at the distribution counter, having communicated in the “user note” the time he/she plans to come to the library.
These requests will be kept available to the user for 24 hours.

1. Locate the work in the card or booklet catalog and make note of placement (shelfmark) and title
2. go to the computer and, Online Catalog, click on the EXTRACAT button
3. Complete the User Identification form as follows:
• User Code: type the abbreviation NB followed by the number of the library membership or loan card
• type in the password
• press the OK button
4. select Biblioteca Braidense and press the Select button
5. enter the signature of the desired work and press the Next button
6. transcribe the requested data (only the title is required) and press the Next button
7. click on the desired service:
• reading public room / reference room
• lending stock materials
8. click on enter request, adding any communications in the user note
9. the transaction is completed when the notice “your request has been entered” comes out
10. click on exit
The user will find the requested works in the Reading Rooms.
Remote requests will be kept available to the user for one day.

Other materials in particular from the Foscoliana Room and the works of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italian writers of fiction, poetry, history, and drama, published in Lombardy, marked Z+, Delta, Omega, Fi, X++, Y+, 13, 18, 21, 22, ZFF, ROM, A+, works of Milanese dialect literature and a series of nineteenth-century Almanacs have been digitized and can be viewed directly from the Library’s computers.

Some materials are stored in off-site off-site storage facilities.

 
Materials stored in the Cavallerizza warehouses are picked up twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday).
Materials stored in the Morimondo depots are picked up once a week (Wednesday).

 
Materials will be made available to users at the Consultation Room on the day they are picked up, after 2 p.m.; please call 02 72263401 for confirmation.

Consultation of manuscripts, rare and valuable works

For users who need to consult the Braidense’s manuscripts and rare books, the Manzonian Fund, the Ricordi Historical Archives Fund and the Lombard Historical Society Fund, the Manzonian Room is made available.

Library reading with own materials

BOOK LIBRARY SERVICES

For users who want to read or study in the Library with their own books or materials, the Reading Room, also known as the Jesuit or Theological Room because it was the study room of the Jesuits, is made available.

The Hall can accommodate 40 readers per shift, and to gain access you must reserve your place at this link.
A number of reference works, encyclopedias and dictionaries are available on the low shelves in the center of the Hall.

Photographic and digital reproductions

Reproductions of the items in the Library’s collections are permitted in accordance with the current copyright regulations. The Library reserves the right to prohibit reproductions that might compromise the state of preservation of an item. The guidelines in this section are applicable only to reproductions requested for non profit purposes, e.g. for study, research, free expression of thought, promotion of cultural heritage. (art. 108, section 3 of the Cultural Heritage Law).
 

In the reading rooms users may be allowed to take photographs of books and other items, provided that the following conditions are met:
• prior authorization from library staff;
• respect of copyright restrictions;
• the reproduction equipment must not come into direct contact with the item/s to be reproduced;
• no exposure to light sources;
• no tripods or light stands.
 

Reproductions can also be requested to the Library’s Duplication Services. Requests must be submitted in writing, choosing one of the following options:

Requests must clearly indicate: author, title and page(s) to be reproduced. For serial publications it is necessary to provide: title of the publication and of the article/essay of interest, year of publication, issue/volume number. Use the reproduction authorization request form (non profit)

 

A reimbursement of expenses is due as specified below:
• € 1,00 for each scan in pdf format (max 200 dpi);
• € 1,50 for each scan in jpg format (max 300 dpi) ;
• € 16,00 for each scan in tiff format (max 400 dpi);

All payments must be made only through the website www.pagonline.cultura.gov.it. When making a payment please select “Pinacoteca di Brera” as “Istituto” and “Servizi Braidense” as “servizio”. In the field named “causale” enter:
1) number of scans requested.

3) Your name (or the name of your company/institution)
Proof of payment must be sent to the library using the above addresses.
 

Once payment is received requests will be processed in the subsequent week, please allow extra time for items stored outside the via Brera site.
The Italian copyright law (law 248/2000) allows reproduction of 15% of a volume or issue of a newspaper/magazine. This limit may be exceeded only in case of works that are out of print. In the case of requests for duplication of substantial parts of a work, the Library can request integral duplication in order to increase its digital collections and for better preservation of the original.

In case duplications are requested for profit purposes applicants are required to pay a fee determined on the basis of the price list available HERE.

Microfilm and Teche Rai

BOOK LIBRARY SERVICES

Microfilm

The service collects about 1,500 microfilmed periodical titles.
The reproduced periodicals can be consulted only in microfilm.
In the general catalog of periodicals and in the online catalog lists the microfilmed work with its location. A catalog of microfilmed works is also available in the room.
To view the microfilms, it is necessary to reserve one of the 2 stations available in the Catalog Room at this link.
In addition, digital reproductions of the requested material can be requested.

 

Teche RAI

The Multimedia Catalog of the RAI document archive is available in the Mediatheque thanks to a collaboration agreement between the Braidense Library and Rai Teche.
The documentation on the Multimedia Catalog is being updated daily and in continuous retrieval of the past.

Teche materials are regularly given away for cultural and educational purposes and also for commercial purposes.

To view the Teche Rai, it is necessary to reserve one of the 2 stations available in the Catalog Room at this link.

Educational services

The Educational Services of the Braidense National Library, in order to promote knowledge of the world of books, the history of the Library and its rich heritage, offer free of charge educational activities, guided tours and training stages aimed at different types of users. The appointments, conducted by in-house staff, are designed for and aimed at citizens and schools of all levels, as well as universities.
In addition, in collaboration with external professionals, collateral activities are offered to groups, schools and individual visitors to the temporary exhibitions organized by the Library to promote and acquaint users with its many and diverse library materials.

 

Proposals for citizenship

• Un pomeriggio in Braidense. A guided tour, focusing on the history and curiosities of the Library, illustrating its oldest library holdings (Pertusati, Gesuitica and Haller libraries) and, among them, the most significant, the Manzonian. Learn more +

Proposals for schools

The Braidense offers schools educational meetings aimed at learning about the world of books and libraries, starting with the Institute’s rich heritage. The appointments, which are free of charge and last about two hours, while dealing with the same topics are adapted to the different age groups of students and are agreed upon with teachers and lecturers.

During the meeting, the oldest collections (Pertusati, Gesuitica and Haller libraries) are also explained, and among them, the most significant, the Manzoniano collection. • Percorsi per le competenze trasversali e l’orientamento (PCTO). For third- and fourth-year students of Secondary School Institutions, the Library offers the opportunity to attend an orientation and training internship, as part of the planned activities. With proposals and articulations agreed, from time to time, with the teachers. PCTO projects are for the whole class and not for individual students.

Proposals for universities

• Guided tours. The Library promotes knowledge of its holdings in the form of collaboration with Italian and foreign organizations and institutions through specific initiatives. It welcomes requests for study visits from university professors who wish to explore topics addressed during lectures by examining ancient and modern materials, and requests for internship placements.

• Training: internships and apprenticeships. The Braidense National Library hosts curricular internships/internships within the framework of agreements stipulated with universities. A training project is prepared for each intern placed with the Host Organization.
