Arabic language and publishing as a meeting place from the 16th to the 18th century.

THE EXHIBITION

If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a different world
Ludwig Wittgenstein, Indagini filosofiche

Biblioteca Braidense continues the presentation of its historical collections that aim to enhance its invaluable and vast library holdings. Following exhibitions devoted to Egypt, China, and Japan in 2015, 2018, and 2019, from Oct. 7 to Nov. 16, 2021, the exhibition “Arabic Language and Publishing as a Meeting Place from the 16th to the 18th Century” has seen works that tell the story of Europe’s evolving knowledge and cultural relations with the Near and Middle East on public display.

On display are more than 100 works chronicling the evolution of Europe’s knowledge and cultural relations with the Near and Middle East.

Through 85 texts from the Braidense, 8 volumes arriving from important Italian libraries and 12 works from private collections, the exhibition presented some of the European intellectual and publishing enterprises that approached the Arab culture of the Mediterranean from the 14th century until the end of the 19th century.

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalog published by Scalpendi with images of all the volumes on display and for each section an essay by the curators illustrating the various contents.
