Giostra delle storie
The Braidense stands as a place for the development of children’s values and for peace. It is a vision that was relaunched in 2022 during the “Week of the Rights of Children and Adolescents” with the project “The Carousel of Stories in Braidense,” curated by the Teatro Laboratorio Pane e Mate in collaboration with a cultural mediator, a visiting librarian who arrived in Milan from Kiev through a cultural corridor because of the ongoing war.
First in the Reading Room of the Braidense and in the Cortile d'onore of Brera, then around some of Milan's neighborhoods, a real hand-drawn carousel with a diameter of 5.5 meters built of wood, papier-mâché and cloth, hand-painted and equipped with 12 white horses connected to the rotating platform with knobs for pushing was set up.
An old traditional fairy tale, entitled The Turnip, was animated and retold during the rounds of the carousel, which was read in both Ukrainian and Italian during the performance. Only minor changes were made to the original fairy tale to allow children to participate. This fable was singled out among many because it speaks of the values of solidarity and generosity and the fact that when you are united you can overcome any obstacle.
The merry-go-round was chosen because it has a high symbolic value and is the ideal tool to work on the dimension of the collective imagination by attracting the audience with the lights, sounds, bamboozlement, challenge, and sharing of an experience. In a world social and cultural context lately heavily marked by the war in Ukraine precisely the difficulties related to this emergency drive a desire to recover a sense of community and belonging that crosses all boundaries.
