Thomas Stearns Eliot
(Saint Louis, 26 settembre 1888 – Londra, 4 gennaio 1965)
Little Gidding, composed and published in 1942, is the fourth of the Quattro quartets, the work of the American poet and critic T. S. Eliot.
The poem combines images of fire and Pentecost to emphasize the need for purification. According to Eliot, the fragmented understanding of the meaning of life and mankind’s estrangement from God lead to a cycle of continuous wars, but this could be avoided if one could learn the lessons of the past. In the poem, the narrator meets a ghost that is a combination of various poets and literary figures. Little Gidding focuses on the unity of the past, present and future, and states that knowledge of this unity is necessary for salvation.
